Stand up paddle boarding is rapidly becoming a very popular pastime. It was originally called "beach boy surfing", named after the famous Waikiki beach boys in Hawaii, who combined their skills in outrigger canoe paddling and surfing. Stand up paddle surfing (SUP) instruction begins on flat water, where you can get your balance on oversized boards. Stand-up boards are longer, wider, thicker than traditional longboards for surfing, which gives them more float and stability. The boards are paddled from a standing position, so some initial balance is required. The rider uses a long shafted paddle for propulsion and steering. There are different strokes you will learn to help you turn, and to make you go.

Standup has become popular on lakes and rivers. Surfers love standup paddle boards because they can catch more waves and have fun even in smaller surf. Many devotees participate in long distance events, traveling downwind between islands (crossings), touring along coastlines, or exploring bays and inlets.

Part of the incredible appeal of standup paddle surfing is that no previous surfing experience is required, and you do not have to be super fit to learn. Anyone can learn to standup paddle board in flat water, and then decide from there to take it into the waves or not. There is no age limit, which makes it a great activity that families can share and do together. The only prerequisite is ability to swim, and comfort level in the water.

Once you have your balance, this is a very pleasant way to tour the ocean, and to explore the coastline and intracoastal waterway. Just cruise and relax, or pick up the pace for an amazing core workout. Standup paddle surfing is a great way to get fit without having to go to the gym. It is a way of exercising and having fun at the same time. Just standing on the board feeling the motion of the water engages hundreds of stabilizer muscles from the soles of your feet to your legs, back and abdominals. SUP has virtually no negative impact on the knees and ankle the joints, and can be great for strengthening the muscles around weak joints. Paddling uses muscles in the abdominals, shoulders, arms, chest and back.

If you are feeling more adventurous, you can try to catch some small waves. North Florida has some of the most gentle surf on the planet that is easy to ride. Most people will be fully satisfied (and exhausted) after their SUP session. We supply all the beginner equipment, and a variety of sizes to accommodate different people sizes. Bigger folks will need more floatation (please let us know if you are over 220lbs). Advanced sup-surfers can rent from a wide selection of differing board sizes and types.
